Why choose a PST LP 80 over an AL 80?
- Pressed Steel LP 80 tanks have a lower operating pressure so there
is less wear and stress on your regulators.
- PST LP 80 tanks are shorter than an AL 80 but same diameter as an
AL 80, so it’s better for people that just can’t dive an
AL 80 because of the length, yet you get the same amount of air. AL
80 is approximately 26 inches tall while the PST LP 80 is approximately
24 inches tall.
- PST LP 80 tanks have better buoyancy characteristics. When AL 80's
buoyancy goes positive under 1000 psi, the PST LP 80 goes neutral. Therefore
less weight on your weight belt to compensate tank buoyancy changes.
- PST LP 80 tanks weigh about the same as a AL 80. An AL 80 is about
37 lbs empty and the PST LP 80 is about 36 lbs empty.
- PST LP 80 holds a true 80 cu. ft. @ 2640 psi, while the AL 80 only
holds 77.4 @ 3000 psi.
- Steel tanks have better resale value. When you buy a AL 80, as soon
as you walk out the door you will have trouble selling a used AL 80
for more than a $100, while steel tanks hold there value.
- Steel tanks are more durable and don't suffer from the same metal
fatigue and neck cracks that AL 80's do. It's hard to find an Aluminum
tank older than 20 years that is still serviceable unless it was kept
in storage and not used for a long time. There are still serviceable
steel 72.7 cu. ft. tanks over 30 years old in use still passing hydro
and VIP tests.
If you are in the market to invest the money to buy new tanks, why waste
the money on a new AL 80 when you can buy a PST LP 80 tank? It’s
an investment in quality gear, that will last you for years and hold it’s
value.
